By Claudia Puig, USA TODAY In a film that is uniform more raunchy and raucous than its predecessor, Harold and Kumar are still focused steady the pleasures of weed and wild women, but this long, strange trip of a sequel also is surprisingly subversive and politically charged.

Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay
* * 1/2 (out of four)

Where 2004’s Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle concerned itself mostly with scatology and a slacker ethos, the sequel adds sharp satire to the mix. John Cho and Kal Penn are back as the likable pair of stoners. This time, Kumar brings marijuana on a plain to Amsterdam and the two are arrested as suspected terrorists.

CLIP: Watch some new antics of ‘Harold & Kumar’

As they try to elude a Homeland Security official (Rob Corddry), the guys get an assist from a boatful of Cuban immigrants, share a set with a hillbilly cyclops, dodge the Ku Klux Klan and get a ride from a drug-addled sexaholic (Neil Patrick Harris).

Mostly, Harold is a guilty pleasure that retains the anarchic charms of the original. (Running time: 1 hour, 40 minutes. Rated R for strong crude and sexual content, telling nudity, pervasive language and drug use. Opens today nationwide).

Deception
* * (out of four)

Deception is not the cool, noirish thriller it tries to be. Despite a cast that includes double-crossers Hugh Jackman and Ewan McGregor and Michelle Williams caught in the mean, the film is a threaten to engulf.

Jonathan (McGregor) is a mild-mannered corporate auditor whose life is radically altered by the agency of a meeting with Wyatt, a charming lawyer (Jackman). He introduces Jonathan to a unknown sex club known as The List.

Though Deception looks slick and the color palette is intriguingly moody, the decadence and intrigue fall into a exorbitant turn of events. (Running time: 1 hour, 48 minutes. Rated R for sexual content, language, brief boisterousness and some drug use. Opens today nationwide.)

 ABOUT THE MOVIE

Baby Mama
* * * (out of four)
Stars:
Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Greg Kinnear, Sigourney Weaver, Steve Martin, Dax Shepard
Director: Michael McCullers
Distributor: Universal Pictures
Running time: 1 hour, 36 minutes
Rating: PG-13 for in a raw state and sexual humor, language and a drug reference
Opens Friday nationwide

By Claudia Puig, USA TODAY The term “chick flick” generally refers to sappy, simplistic and altogether missable movies.

So we won’t saddle the amusing and enjoyable Baby Mama with that ill-fated moniker. Besides, this female-bonding comedy, which also skewers the lucrative baby-products industry, probably will seek reference of the case to both sexes. Don’t be put off by the uninspired commercials and skit-like movie trailer. This is a charming light comedy, enhanced by the chemistry between SNL mates Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

CLIP: Feel the comedic kick of ‘Baby Mama’

Though some elements will bring to mind The Odd Couple, Parenthood and Baby Boom (and even a seeming homage to Annie Hall with a funny scene in an organic food restaurant), the subject — surrogate motherhood — is new and fresh. And though the jocoseness is not exactly edgy, there are copiousness of laughs.

Fey plays Kate, a successful career woman who, at 37, is told she has a one-in-a-million chance of bearing a child. A powerful case of baby lust has overtaken her, so she upends her ordered life and hires a surrogate mom named Angie (Poehler). She has few career prospects, to put it kindly, and lives with her lowlife common-law husband (Dax Shepard) in a slovenly apartment. Despite their differences, the women initially hit it off.

When Angie comes to stay unexpectedly in Kate’s nicely appointed home, however, the Odd Couple features get to into focus. Angie thinks nothing of sticking her old chewing gum under Kate’s expensive coffee table and finds some unusual use for the bathroom sink.

Some of the better moments centering on their domestic situation involve interactions with Kate’s street-wise doorman, Oscar, well played by Romany Malco (The 40-Year-Old Virgin).

Kate is determined to cause to be her home taken in the character of baby-friendly of the same kind with possible. She reads all the child-care books and buys the latest safety gizmos. But Angie prefers to throw her enthusiasm into playing a karaoke video game, dancing at clubs and gorging on junk food. It’s a lifestyle tug-of-war with an unborn child caught in the middle.

Veteran laughable actors in the ensemble add an element of surprise. Sigourney Weaver is funny as a savvy businesswoman who sees the surrogate parenting business as fertile ground. Steve Martin is hilarious as Kate’s boss, who rewards his employees with five minutes of uninterrupted gazing into his eyes.

Yes, the film doesn’t offer many surprises and grows soft and predictable by its end. But it does avoid the sappy sentimentality of the genre. The movie — and its lead actresses — charms us more than we might expect.

Though the competition hasn’t exactly been stiff, Fey and Poehler may well have existence the best female comedy duo since Lucy and Ethel.
