By Claudia Puig, USA TODAY At one point in The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything (* ½ out of four), an animated film based on the Veggie Tales series, misfit vegetables ask: “What kind of crazy B-movie am I in?”

Three busboys — Elliot the cucumber, Sedgwick the gourd and George the grape — want to be pirates at the Pieces of Ate dinner theater. Magically, they are transported to the 17th century, where they rescue a princess and prince.

Veggie Tales is a faith-based franchise that uses a blend of a religious/moral message and humor to teach about honesty and forgiveness. But Pirates lacks the humor of the videos and A Veggie Tales Movie. The trio learns that heroes come in all sizes, hardly a revelation to audiences of any age. (Rated G. Running time: 1 hour, 20 minutes. Opens today nationwide.)
